Admission into the TSTT program is very competitive and selective,
but highly personal. Self-assessment and discipline are vital in
the decision to pursue a teaching career. Selection criteria includes:
- A grade point average of 80
- Good attendance records
- Leadership potential
- Recommendations by teachers, administrators, and guidance counselors
- Ethnicity
- And a writing sample of why one wants to be a TSTT participant.
Once accepted into the TSTT program, students must:
- Maintain a "B" average through their senior year
in high school
- Volunteer as tutors 2 hours a week during the school year and
20 hours a week during the summer.
They also must commit to teaching in a TSTT participating school
district for one year upon graduation from college. Regular attendance,
and active involvement in regional activities is also a requirement.
Students receive tutor training, SAT preparation, teacher mentorship,
college visits, college survival workshops, and career counseling.
The student retention rate in the TSTT program is over 90%.
