Today's Students, Tomorrow's Teachers (TSTT), an independent, non-profit
organization chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, was
founded 10 years ago by Dr. Bettye Perkins, an educator and former
IBM Corporation executive. The organization which is based in Westchester
County, New York, is a partnership of school districts, businesses,
foundations, communities and colleges that provide internships and
financial support. Major contributors include Argent, JPMorganChase,
MasterCard International, MBIA, WB11, Wachovia, and Verizon.
The organization serves 177 high school students and 180 college
students, who come from heavily diverse, populated school districts
located in Westchester, Rockland, and Ulster counties and the Greater
Rochester Region in New York, and Fairfield County in Connecticut.
These include Mt. Vernon, Peekskill, Ossining, Spring Valley, Yonkers
and Stamford, CT. 70% of the students are African-Americans and
30% are Hispanics and other ethnic groups; and 75% of the students
are first generation to attend college.
The students are required to maintain a "B" average and
to volunteer as tutors, two (2) hours per week during the school
year and twenty (20) hours during the summer. The students receive
tutor training, SAT preparation training, teacher mentorship, college
visitations, college survival workshops, and career counseling.
The high school student retention rate is 92%.
Eighteen (18) colleges provide 50% tuition scholarship: College
of New Rochelle, Fordham University, Gordon College, Iona College,
Keuka College, Marist College, Manhattan College, Manhattanville
College, Mercy College, Pace University, Queens College (Math Majors
only), Roberts Wesleyan College, Sacred Heart University, St. John
Fisher College, St. Thomas Aquinas, Syracuse University, Texas College,
and University of Connecticut. The college admission rate is 94%,
and the college graduation rate is nearly 75%.
Twenty-one TSTT graduates are now teachers, a 100% placement rate.
TSTT has received national recognition from the U. S. Department
